It was official. I was coming unhinged.
But then Franco B swung through (be on the lookout for some hot new shit from my boy) and hooked me up with a friend's spare for Lu. I was off to Emo's to see what all the hub-ub was about on this cold and nasty Tuesday night.
I saw Senor Fiasco almost a year ago when he opened for The Legendary Roots Crew at Stubb's. That was an amazing show. Amazing.
But what would Lupe offer this time around after last month's release of what I think was a very disappointing sophomore LP, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool? I think there's definitely something to be said for not getting Jay-Z involved on this second album (He executive produced Food and Liquor). People apparently love the new album though, at least, this many.
Lu brought a live band to play real music songs behind his fast talking words. A respectable move. In my experience when emcees play in front of real instruments it's a great time.
But something was off about the sound. Could be mediocre musicians or the Tuesday sound guy, but I ultimately did not like what I heard.
I don't think that Lupe played in front of a band when he came through in '07. He was on point and one hunid then. But that was Stubb's; this was Emo's.
I have been told by musician friends that the sound at Emo's outside stage is "bad." I havn't ever picked up on that until possibly last night. I've seen some really great shits out there but from the back of the place by the bar last night you couldn't even hear what the hell the music sounded like.
Cue Brick Tamland because it was all LOUD NOISES.
Someone mentioned to me that somehow the wetness could effect the sound and make the show suck? I've never heard of this but sure, it's another theory.
The crowd was cold but lively at times. They were not, however, incited to riot like last year's Clipse show (Yes I will forever compare shows at Emo's to last year's Clipse show).
To be honest, that show, along with The Cool, sound like they were mailed in. It hurts me to say that because I love where Lu's coming from and what he has to say. You gotta execute.
So we went inside to mingle with whatever rock crowd was milling about. Turns out they had a group called MGMT in the house. It was warmer in there. That's about all I can say.
Here's Lupe's setlist for the most part:
Real
Touch the Sky
Feelgood, Inc Flow
The Instrumental
I Gotcha
Sunshine
Pressure
The Cool
Kick, Push
Daydream
Dumb it Down
And I'm sure Superstar was in there somewhere - Matthew Santos was on hand as well...
I'd just like to comment on the weird ratio of songs from the old and new albums. There are only two songs on my list from The Cool. Maybe Lu doesn't like his new album either.
Anywho, here's pics!!
The Texas Longhorn community would like to officially welcome Senor Lupe Fiasco.

You're trippin! I was front row, and heard everything word for word...That was a great show, the band went well, with the exception of the mic going nuts at times...I happened to be lucky enough to cop a set list after the show, and it was 25 deep: Intro, Real, Touch The Sky, Feel Good, Instrumental, I Gotcha, Sunshine, He Say She Say, Pressure, The Cool, Hurt Me Soul, Kick Push, American Terrorist, Day Dream, The Coolest, High Definition, Hip Hop Saved My Life, Streets On Fire, Dumb It Down, Little Weapon, Gold Watch, Paris Tokyo, Superstar.....I was satisfied after the show....I wouldve preferred it to be at Stubbs like his show last Feb, but Ill take what I can get....
Sorry matt this is jamal, I made the anonymous post. I got to this website from lupethefiasco.blogspot.com (the one that gets the shoutout at the end of fighters on lupe's "the cool").

OK so I must say...
I will respect your opinions about the concert. But, I think they are ludicrous and outlandish!! I loved this concert soooo much. I think what makes the difference with people's opinions about the concert is whether you are a Lupe Fiasco fan or just a fan of some of his music.
I have been listening to him since his mixtape days, so this concert was like an answer to my prayers, and sure enough, everything I hoped for was fulfilled. He brought his style, personality (the transitions between the songs were so clever), and his best music, from beginning to end. The band was hot, Gemstones was hot, Bishop G was hot, Sarah Green was hot (even though her mic wasn't loud enough). Lupe performed the entire concert with so much passion, and I could swear he was pulling energy from somewhere because he never slowed down. You can feel that this music is more than just about making money--it's his life, and he adores it. I felt like I was floating on clouds the whole concert--it really was everything I would've ever wished for (and no, I was not high, that was the guy next to me lol).
Also, you only have the track listings up until the intermission!! He did several songs from the new album! AND...if you couldn't hear then you shoulda got there early!! I don't mean to sound defensive, I just personally thought it was very well put together show and it irks me that someone who had to "see what all the hub-ub was all about" had so much to say about a concert and a crowd full of passion and adoration for THE Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known as...LUPE FIASCO.
LOL, that's hilarious. I'm glad I could get those ticks to ya!
