Brand Nubian: Schlept On

Well, 2/3 of Nubian ain't bad...

Grand Puba couldn't be there, but last Saturday's Brand Nubian show at The Parish still went pretty hard. Sadat X and Lord Jamar held it down in front of Connie Price and the Keystones for almost an hour of a lovely evening and Fanny Franklin of Orgone stopped by and did a couple numbers with the Keystones as well as the backing vocals to Nubian's Don't Let It Go To Your Head.

Nicely done as always, ma'am.

Good show, not great. The crowd wasn't as enthusiastic as it could have been: you could tell the real Brand Newbies from those that just tagged along for the evening. But, as Bavu Blakes says, "You can't blame the audience. You have to cultivate an audience."

I'm not saying that over the years, these guys haven't cultivated an international audience, but Nubian's songs aren't really for dancing and getting hyped. There was a lot of head nodding going on, and, being a non-dancer, I can get down with that.

It's also possible that the Black Lips concert down the street at Emo's took some of the hipster crowd that may or may not have wanted to come to Brand Nubian.

Absolutely no hate here. I'm glad I got to see another legendary artist on this magical mystery scion tour. Just one thing, why were there so many people walking around with the Scion backpacks? I was about ready to ask one of them for an eighth.

Here's pics.

All For One

Lord Jamar

Sadat looks sleepy...

Peace to the gods...

Finally enough light to get a decent shot...

Jesus, Connie Price is a dork...

Sadat's got one of those distinctive voices that you don't forget

Did you know Lord Jamar was on The Sopranos?

Holla aawwready.
